Headland Park – Georges Heights

The showpiece of Headland Park is Georges Heights Lookout. Marvel at the spectacular panoramic views of Sydney Heads, the Eastern Suburbs and stunning city skyline & out the heads to the Pacific Ocean.

A visit to Georges Head is a must for all military history buffs. The Georges Head battery is in Mosman, on the northern side of Sydney Harbour.

It’s easy to see why military experts placed guns here in the 1870s as part of an outer line of harbour defences.

Georges Heights and Lower Georges Heights served as Army bases
for well over 100 years.

Georges Heights has a rich military history forming part of the harbour defences. Then they became barracks, a World War I hospital, a training centre and a transport depot.

Wander around Georges Head to see military fortifications from the World War II era.

Examine the parapet cut into sandstone at the start of the 19th century to ward off a feared French invasion.

You can also explore a series of interlinking tunnels and passageways, excavated after the withdrawal of British colonial troops garrisoned in Sydney.

On the first Sunday of each month, you get a chance to venture into rarely-seen tunnels and gun emplacements and explore beautiful bushland on the Harbour Trust’s guided walking tour at Headland Park. Bookings are essential.

Some tunnels are dark and uneven underfoot – it’s a good idea to bring a torch and wear appropriate footwear.

Then, walk around the headlands to see World War II gun emplacements and enjoy some spectacular views of the gateway to Sydney Harbour, South Head and North Head.

Or try The Burnt Orange boutique café is located in the beautifully renovated golf club house from the 1930s at Georges Head. It features a wrap-around verandah with stunning views of Sydney Harbour.
