The name Kurraba is of Aboriginal origin. Earlier names for this point were Thrupps Point, after Lieutenant Alfred Thrupp who was granted land here c.1814, and Ballast Point, when the area operated as a foreshore sandstone quarry in the 1850’s and stone from the site was used as ballast for ships returning to England. In 1855 some 8,000 tons of stone were taken from Kurraba Point to complete Fort Denison. In 1883 the land was sold to the Port Jackson and Manly Steam Ship Company who established a large depot and engineering works here, carrying out ferry maintenance, repair and administration. The workshops closed in 1964 and in 1974 the land was purchased by the State government. At this time the site was cleared and grassed and the present Kurraba Reserve created. A searchlight battery was located at Hodgson Lookout for a period during WWII.

The Sydney Morning Herald on 20 October 1854 said it was: A pretty marine villa with commanding views of Port Jackson. Built in the first half of the 19th century, it was acquired by North Sydney Council in 1979 and converted into a local history museum, and is one of Council’s premier historical sites open to the public. It is a rare example of an early timber slab house nestled in a remnant Victorian garden. Featuring the history of the house and its former occupants, Don Bank’s displays focus on social history and our changing times.
