International prize for upgraded park
Redfern Park and the adjoining Redfern Oval – which provides training facilities for the South Sydney Rabbitohs NRL football club and is its spiritual home – was upgraded in 2007.
City of Sydney staff play a vital role in looking after the park to keep it clean and welcoming for the diverse local community.
In 2014 the park was internationally recognised as one of the top parks in the world after receiving a prestigious Green Flag Award for recreation and relaxation.
The Green Flag Award is an international accolade from peak body, Parks Forum, which recognises great parks for their usability and community value. The award was the City of Sydney’s second Green Flag prize with Hyde Park being recognised in 2013.
The 4.8 hectare park was designed and constructed in the 1880s as a typical Victorian ‘pleasure ground’ and by the early 20th century sports facilities became a permanent fixture within the grounds.
Redfern Park was the site of former Prime Minister Paul Keating’s ‘Redfern Speech’, regarded as a defining moment in the reconciliation process with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Redfern Oval Community Room is available for hire 7 days a week.
